Sundi Lofty, Episcopal High School class of ‘94

April 8th, 2010

Sundi Lofty is a freelance television writer/producer whose work includes television specials such as the NAACP Image Award winning show, “In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview.”

I attended The Potomac School and Episcopal High School, both located in Northern Virginia. They afforded me a top-notch education and gave me opportunities I might not have otherwise experienced.  They were, however, not without their challenges.

As a student of color, I often grappled with social issues (Who would I date?  Who would date me?).  I also felt the burden of “representing” my entire race, the pressure to perform well and give “the” black perspective on an issue.

All in all, part of what I believe makes a good prep school experience for today’s students of color is for teachers, administrators and parents to be aware of the socio-psychological issues students of color will encounter and find ways to support them. Should my children one day choose prep school, we will certainly be prepared.
